Council Tax Reduction 2023-24

Each year the Council has to decide whether to continue with, replace or revise its Council Tax Reduction scheme for working age applicants in its area.

This year the Council has decided that changes need to be made due to the cost of living crisis, which is putting pressure on household budgets. We recognise that the scheme needs to provide as much support as possible to those most in need.

What is Council Tax Reduction?

Council Tax Reduction is a discount for council tax available to people on a low income. The amount of discount that you receive is based on your household income.

At the moment,  the maximum discount for pension age households is 100% and working age households 85% of their council tax bill.

What are the proposed changes?

The main changes that we are proposing are:

  • Retain the maximum 85% reduction for working age residents who receive certain benefits

  • Uplift some income bands by 20% to provide additional support for residents

  • Introduce a standard earnings disregard of £25.00

  • Adjust the income calculation for self-employed residents who receive carers allowance, personal independence payments and disability living allowance.
